I’ve always been fascinated by the name a church gives its entrance. I don’t know if it says anything about the church, but there sure are some creative names for these entrances or gathering areas. Here’s some of my favorites – any you would add?
My favorite has always been the word:
Narthex
Yep. Narthex. The Narthex usually leads to the Nave.

I vote for Narthex myself. It is the traditonal name that was used to refer to church entrance areas in the Gothic and Renaissance periods. As Cindy stated, it would lead you into the nave of the cathedral. Some of the other one’s are interesting, mezzanine however is misused, since a mezzanine is typically a partial floor area that occurs between 2 full stories of a building, not sure why a church would attach that name to their entrance. Solomon’s Colonade is kinda cool too!

I’m Greek Orthodox, and we still call the area the Narthex and the Nave is the main area. All orthodox churches have them.

They’re referred to as Narthexes in Catholic churches too.
